Obituary

Charlie Brack Ward was born April 29, 1922 to Brack Abe and Hagar Missouri Ward. He passed away July 6, 2009. He spent his early years with his mother's family. When he became a teenager he went to live with his father's family. It didn't take long for him to discover he didn't care for farming, so he packed his bags and moved north to Pennsylvania to find work. As a young man his first job was cooking in a small diner. He continued working as a cook until he worked his way up to head chef in one of the areas five star hotels. He soon tired of that line of work and went to work for Westinghouse Manufacturing Company.
He joined the United States Navy in 1945. After serving several months in the Navy, World War II was finally over. He jokingly credited himself with having ended it.
His next move was back to Winston-Salem, NC where he fell madly in love with Rose Mary Martin. On February 13, 1957 Charlie and Rose were married.
Charlie enjoyed a variety of hobbies. He loved hunting, raising rabbits, mink and chinchillas. Of all his hobbies he enjoyed oil painting most. His paintings now beautifully accent the homes of family members and friends. Charlie also wrote songs in his spare time. He wrote a song titled, "Later Tonight" which was published in 1948.
Everyone who knew Charlie knew that he was a very loving and devoted husband and father.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ruby Lee Jordan.
He leaves to celebrate his life and cherish his memories his wife, Rose Martin Ward; four children, Henry Franklin Ward, Dexter Brack Ward (Cynthia), Tod Randall Ward, and Tonya Yvette Hasan (Ghali); three granddaughters, Iesha Talee Ward, Tacoa Yvette Ward, and Soncerae Roseanna Hasan; one great-grandson, Jawan Christopher Hammock; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11am Friday, July 10, 2009 from the Russell Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 10:30am until 11am on Friday at the funeral home.
