Mr. Charles Albert Smith, 53, affectionately known as "Bubba" of 135 Frontier Drive, Kernersville, NC was received by his maker on Tuesday, June 19, 2007. Mr. Smith was born on September 14, 1953 in Wilmington, NC, to Otto and Jimmie Smith.
He received at Bachelor of Science in Physical Education in 1979 from North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC where he was an accomplished sportsman: All-Conference and Section Champion in track, a member of the wrestling team, and co-captain of the football team in which he received numerous awards resulting in being drafted to play for the Denver Broncos for two years.
Following his sports career, Charles taught in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System before beginning an over twenty year career with US Airways formally known as Piedmont Airlines.
Charles was a member of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church where he was on the Usher Board and the Trustee Board.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Jimmie Dean Smith; one sister, Gloria Smith Davidson; and one brother, Douglas Erwin Smith.
Charles leaves to cherish his memories his devoted wife, Deborah Simmons Smith of the home; two sons, Joshua of the home and Ian (Tandra) of Fayetteville, NC; five grandchildren, Jada, Destiny, Justin, Ladarius and Ebony; four sisters, Brenda Smith and Deborah (Terence) Johnson both of Wilmington, NC, Karen (Melvin) Lewis of Okinawa, Japan, and Bernice (James) Wells of Columbia, SC; nine brothers, Christopher (Deborah) of Durham, NC, Kenneth (Barbara) of Marietta, GA, Gregory, Michael (Cherry), Jimmy, Stevie (Martha), and Daryl (Missy) all of Wilmington, NC, Otto Smith of Columbia, SC and Larry Smith; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm Monday, June 25, 2007 from the Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, 1400 Fitch Street, Winston-Salem, NC with Pastor Donald L. Salley officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 1pm until 2pm on Monday at the Church.
