Charles was affectionately known as "Lil' Bro" (pronounced Lil' Bruh). He graduated from Atkins High School in 1966 and furthered his education by attending and completing several courses at Winston Salem Bible College. He was also a member of Toastmasters International where he fine-tuned his leadership and communication skills.
Charles was a proud veteran of the United States Army where he was a Specialist 4. Upon completion of his tour, he continued to serve in the United States National Guard. With serving, he was given opportunities to travel the world and learn a few languages.
Charles retired from R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company where he completed 37 years of service. He was a dedicated worker in the city's downtown Reynolds factories, Whitaker Park, Tobaccoville, NC, and King, NC. He received various awards such as the Manufacturing Division's "Joshua" Award in recognition of demonstrating initiative and consistently exceeding job requirements, a Certificate of Appreciation for Achieving Outstanding Attendance, and a Certificate of continuous service with R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.
Charles was a devoted family man who looked forward to spending time with family and friends. He never met a stranger. He could be found cracking jokes at any given moment and then in deep discussion the next. He was known as having a servant's heart. He could be found taking meals weekly to family members, seniors, and the sick and shut-in. He would provide lawn care for those who were unable to physically tend to their yards. He was a generous, warm-hearted giver who did not look for anything in return. He is a former boxer who boxed in exhibition tournaments within NC. He was known as "Kid Dynamite". He hung up his gloves to focus on ministry work. A man of faith, he enjoyed evangelizing and spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. He was an avid reader who could always be found studying Biblical and health publications. Charles was an advocate for one's spiritual and physical well-being. He would often share his resources with others and would look forward to follow-up discussions to show what you have learned on the subject.
Charles loved music! One of his favorite past times included listening to music, having his children play the songs he liked on instruments, and watching musical concerts with his family. He was a bassist, who would often sing as he played and was known to tickle the ivory now and then. He helped to cultivate musical gifting within his family via musical lessons, the purchase of instruments, and exposure to national and local musical artists by attending concerts.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his siblings, Johnny E. Dubose, Andreana Dubose Little, Joseph Jerome Flowers, and Jane Sandra Dubose Penn.
