Charles Louis Chatman, "SONNY", was born on April 29, 1943 in Bamberg, SC to Tom and Lucy Chatman.  He departed this earthly life on August 13, 2024.

He attended all public schools in Denmark, SC and later moved to New York City, NY where he was employed at Franklin Paper Box Folding Company for a number of years.  Afterwards, he returned to his native South Carolina where he was employed at Lowes, Inc.  He then moved to Winston-Salem, NC where he worked at American Human Services until his retirement.

In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Washington Chatman; three sisters, Maggie Parker, Sarah Johnson, and Elizabeth Ray; two brothers, Willie Chatman and Rollie Saxon; and three children, Crystal Chatman, Geniece "GiGi" Chatman, and Eric McCormick.

He leaves to mourn his passing two sons, Garren (Kassandra) Chatman of New Jersey and Charles Chatman, Jr. of New York; 17 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy (John) Ray of Lewisville, NC and Peggy Faust of Denmark, SC; one brother, Robert (Deloris) Chatman of Denmark, SC; two sisters-in-law, Alnetha Chatman of Branchville, SC and Carmen Saxon of Queens, NY; his former wife, Jeanette Chatman of Brooklyn, NY; two step-children, Tracey Washington and Tyson Washington of South Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Friday, August 23, 2024 at Russell Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Saturday, August 24, 2024 at First Calvary Baptist Church with Reverend Derwin Montgomery officiating. The family visitation will be held from 10:30am until 11:00am on Saturday at the Church.
