Mr. Charles Monroe Callands, 71, affectionately known as "Cowboy" was born August 30, 1938 to Henry E. Callands and Pressie A. Dearman. He departed this earthly life on Friday, November 20, 2009.
He was employed by the City of Winston-Salem for many years, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 17 years, and retired from Wake Forest University/Baptist Medical Center after eight years of service. He was most recently employed by Alamance County Schools.
Cowboy was well known and loved by many as a result of the service he provided to the residents of Forsyth and Guilford Counties and surrounding areas through his lawn service, "Mr. and Mrs. Cowboy's Landscaping." He touched the lives of many with his radiant smile and warming handshake. Cowboy never met a stranger. He had a heart to serve others and a desire to help them in any way he could.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Everette Callands; a sister, May Colie; and a daughter, Stephanie R. Callands.
He leaves to celebrate his life, his loving and devoted wife, Loretta D. Callands; eight sons, Edward (Charlene), Bart (Angie), and Lester M. Callands, Joseph (Darlene) and Robin (Rachel) Anderson all of Winston-Salem, NC, Clyde (Michelle) Anderson of Hendersonville, NC, James (Caroline) Anderson of Fayetteville, NC, and Connie (Michelle) Anderson of Mooresville, NC; four daughters, Teressa Callands of Mount Airy, NC, Hope (Emanuel) Haney and Brenda Anderson both of Winston-Salem, NC and Corrine (Larry) Smoot of Lexington, NC; one devoted, adopted son, Herbert Williams; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 12Noon Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at the New Birth Worship Center in East Bend, NC with Reverend Dr. James L. E. Hunt officiating. Interment will follow in the Locust Grove Cemetery, Westfield, NC. The family visitation will be held this evening from 7pm until 8:30pm at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel.
