CARLTON ABU GBONDO EVERSLEY was born on June 14, 1957 in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, NY, to John C. Eversley Sr. and Dorothy L. Hockett Eversley. He transitioned to be with his Lord and Savior on September 16, 2019. His impact on those he touched in his many roles as son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, nephew, uncle, cousin, friend, pastor, teacher, advocate and activist can never be measured, but will always be remembered.
Dr. Eversley was a graduate of the Brooklyn public schools and was baptized, licensed and ordained at the Concord Baptist Church, by the late Reverend Dr. Gardner C. Taylor, Senior Pastor. He graduated from Oberlin College, in Oberlin, Ohio in 1978 with an individual major, Black Religion and Urban Studies, and earned his Master of Divinity degree from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL with a concentration in the "Church and the Black Experience" in 1981. At Garrett, he was a John Hayes Holmes Scholarship recipient, a Presidential Scholar (full tuition awarded) and a Benjamin Elijah Mays Fellow. In 1999 he earned his Doctor of Ministry degree at the Interdenominational Theological Center (Johnson C. Smith Seminary). His dissertation, entitled How a Small Black Presbyterian Church Affected Afrocentric Public Education in a Midsized Southern City, was emblematic of his commitment to his faith, to the education of African American children, and his belief that activism was demanded in order to be true to those commitments.
After moving to Winston-Salem in 1982, Dr. Eversley became pastor of Dellabrook Presbyterian Church in 1984. He considered it his greatest blessing to be able to serve his congregation. He counted his service to the community as another great blessing, and actively participated in and supported numerous organizations both as a member and in leadership roles. He was the Founder and President of 100 Black Men (Winston-Salem), served as President of the Forsyth Ministers' Fellowship, Education Chair of the NAACP (Winston-Salem Chapter), Information Officer for Citizens United for Justice and Darryl Hunt Defense Fund, and as both President and Public Affairs Chair of the Ministers' Conference of Winston-Salem and Vicinity. He also loved to teach, and held positions at Winston-Salem State University, Wake Forest University Divinity School, and Carter G. Woodson Charter School.
His greatest love, second only to his faith, was for his family. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Luellen Curry; mother, Mrs. Dorothy Eversley; brother, Eric Eversley (Jeanie); mother-in-law, Mrs. Ellen Corum; sister-in-law, Ellen Gaines; brothers-in-law, Roger Corum, Robert Corum (Cecilia), Ronnie Corum (Lily), Robin Corum, Richard Corum (Michelle) and John Corum; two children, Benjamin Mandela Eversley and Kiara Mondlane Eversley; two grandchildren, Andre Benjamin Wall and Zuri Belle Marie Eversley; nieces, Karen Addison (Michael), Andrea Eversley, and Vera Eversley; nephews, Joey Eversley, Eric Van Eversley (Massiel), Andre Eversley (Leah); and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, John C. Eversley, Sr.; his brother, John C. Eversley, Jr.; his nephew, Brian Eversley; and great-nephew Demetrius Kyle Eversley-Winston.
