Carl Jerome Davis was born in Winston-Salem, NC on February 1, 1948 to Grace Laverne Davis and John Davis. He was the younger brother of Alva Jean Sawyer (Davis) and Shirley Johnson.
He attended Atkins High School and was a member of the men's basketball and football teams. He was employed with Thomasville Furniture Factory for 17 years, Baptist Hospital for 6 years, Food Lion for 3 years and was a deacon, lead usher and custodian at New Zion Baptist Church for 8 years. He was a devoted member of New Zion Baptist Church, a born-again Christian, and a loving husband, brother, cousin, uncle, father, grandfather, and friend.
He is survived by his ex-wife and devoted partner, Mary Pruitt Davis; sons, Carl Lamont Hampton and Marquis Davis; grandchildren, Lamar Hampton, Carriahnna Amos and Amaria Davis; step-daughters, Joslyn Pruitt and grandchildren, Jordan Pruitt, Kierra Pruitt, JaMarey Pruitt, Jah'Mya Pruit, Nikki Pruitt and grandchildren, Kasyia Pruitt and Ka'Den Pruitt, Shuntia Pruitt and grandchildren, Ya'Haida Pruitt, Kristien Pruitt, and Denard Cunningham, Rhonda Hampton and children, Rashad Hampton, Rashanda Hampton and grandchildren, and Renee Hampton and children Taquisha Fullard, Jaiwan Fullard, James Bruton, Joshua Robinson and grandchildren; nephews and niece, Wayne L. Sawyer (Phyllis Nuckles) and children D'Atra Sawyer and Dante Sawyer, Donald R. Sawyer Jr. (Latonya Sawyer) and children Donald R. Sawyer III and children, Dominique Sawyer and children, Darren A. Sawyer (Blanche Sawyer) and children Xavier Sawyer and Alexander Sawyer, Kevan R. Sawyer (Masonne Sawyer) and children Kieran Sawyer and Sydné Sawyer and Pame' Sawyer-Smith (Jason O. Smith); cousins, Eddie Ray McClendon (Vera McClendon) and children Latricia McLendon (daughter, Kiara Handy and children), Eddie Ray McLendon, Jr. (and children) and Richard McClendon (and children), Queen Neal Crosby and son Timothy Neal; aunt, Gloria Davis Littlejohn; cousins, Sylvia Davis Moore, William Littlejohn, Richella Littlejohn-Little, Kim Chisholm and half-sister, Shirley Johnson.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Grace Laverne Davis and John Davis; step-father, Henry C. Lowery; sister, Alva Jean Sawyer; aunts, Arnzella Neal, Melba Fulp, and Daisy Lee Rose; cousins, Lloyd Gambrell and daughter Gina Gambrell, Charles Neal, Wanda Neal Harrington and daughter Meredith McGee, Penny Littlejohn and stepson Rodney Hampton.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, January 27, 2024 at New Zion Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 12:30pm until 1:00pm on Saturday at the Church. A repast will follow the interment at The Building, 454 East Monmouth St. W-S, NC 27127.
