Mrs. Betty G. Revis of Winston-Salem, NC was the third of four children born on September 21, 1933 to William and Abbey Douglas Golightly. She departed this life on Thursday, October 30, 2008 after a lengthy illness. She was reared in Greenville, SC and graduated salutatorian from Sterling High School. Betty was known to all by her giving and generous spirit. With two of her siblings in college, her parents asked her to wait until one of them graduated before pursuing her studies. She made the best of it by enlisting in the United States Air Force and served from 1952 to 1954.
While enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, she married Anthony T. Revis. Although, women were allowed to be married while serving in the Armed Services, upon pregnancy they were discharged. She served until her pregnancy with her first child and was honorably discharged as an A/2C. As a lovingly devoted mother, she did not work outside her home until her last child was in kindergarten. She worked as a dietary aide in hospitals in Maryland and North Carolina.
Betty had an abiding and unwavering faith in God. Despite life events and relocations, she always found a church home. While growing up in Greenville, she was an active member of Allen AME Zion Church. After marriage and the initial move to LaGrange, NC she joined St. Luke Free Will Baptist Church. With her move to Washington, DC and Maryland, she converted to Catholicism and was an active member of St. Benedict, the Moor and St. Joseph Catholic Churches. Upon returning to LaGrange, she affiliated with Holy Trinity Catholic Church located in a neighboring town. After the death of her husband, she returned to St. Luke Free Will Baptist Church in LaGrange where she felt loved by the congregation and at home. She sang in the Senior Choir until moving to Winston-Salem, NC.
Betty, "Miss Betty" to most, had a broad smile and heart as big as all outdoors! Everybody knew that a good "down-home" meal and sweet tea were to be had at her table. Many will attest that if you needed a place to stay, her home a soft place to land until you got yourself together.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 34 years, Anthony T. Revis, their first born daughter, Charlotte and two siblings, William Golightly and Mary Carter
She is survived by three children a son, Ricky Carl Revis (Ayda) of Kinston, NC; two daughters, Sheila R. Smallwood (Milander) of Winston-Salem, NC and Rene' R. Shingles (Stan) of Mt. Pleasant, MI; one brother, Charles Golightly (Patricia) of Greenville, SC, three sisters-in- law, Janie Golightly of New York, Shirley Williams (Lou) and Thomasene Richard (Ira); one brother-in-law Frank Reavis all of Winston-Salem, NC; eight granddaughters, Jeanette(Josh), Rose ( Corey), Alicia (Derrick), Linda, Antionette, Shanita, Natisha (Dameon), and a host of nieces, nephew, cousins and friends. She will be truly missed by her life- long girl-friends, Evelyn Vincent of Washington, DC and Wonda Sapp of Valdosta, GA.
Although she will be missed, the family acknowledges that when she awoke 9:07 on October 30th, she knew where she was, who she was with (Jesus) and no longer required oxygen. For her, it could not get any better than that.
