Mrs. Betty Jean Mickens Manning, 67, of Winston-Salem, NC passed away on Sunday October 14, 2007 at Forsyth Medical Center following a period of illness. She was born July 24, 1940 in Winston-Salem to Thomas and Mary Mickens.
Mrs. Manning was a member of St. John C.M.E. Church where she served as a devoted Stewart for many years. She attended the public schools of the city and was a graduate of Winston-Salem State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. She was retired from R J Reynolds Tobacco Company after 24 years of employment. She was also a member of the Eastern Star Beauty of the West Chapter #36 and also a devoted and committed Past Commandress of Sethos Court #105, DOI. Due to her outstanding service to the Court, she received the Commandress of the Year award in 1982 from the Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Nobles Mystic Shrine of North and South American and its Jurisdiction, Inc.
Mrs. Manning was a loving and caring person to everyone she met. She never met a stranger and demonstrated her love with her wisdom, service, and gifts.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, James Thomas Manning on August 4, 1994.
Mrs. Manning is survived by her sons, Timothy Andre Manning of the home, Christopher Neal Manning (Darrelle) of Winston-Salem, NC; a daughter-in-law, Minnie Ijames-Scott; the loving grandmother to four grandchildren, Danielle C. Manning, Reginald Scott, Jr., Melita Raeneal Scott, and James Ryan Scott all of Winston-Salem, NC; two brothers, Thomas Mickens (Virginia) and Preston Mickens (Connie); two sisters, Mrs. Ella O'Neil and Mrs. Mary Hairston; a sister-in-law, Mayneal Manning; nieces and nephews, Benjamin Mickens (Donna), Karl O'Neil, Thomas Mickens, III. (Audrey), Tammy Mickens, Preston Mickens, Jr., Prescott Mickens, Pamela Mickens, Prenessa Lowery (David), Prenard Mickens, B. Denard Mickens, James Hairston, Michael Manning, Maurice Manning, Larry Manning, and Cassandra Manning; she will also leave behind many other wonderful relatives and dear friends who will cherish her memories.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11am Wednesday, October 17, 2007 from the St. John CME Church with Reverend Dr. Moses Goldmon officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 10am until 11am on Wednesday at the Church.
