Mrs. Bertha McKay Johnson, 81, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2020 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home surrounded by her family. She was born on May 5, 1939 in Darlington, SC to the late Susanna and Dock McKay, Sr.
Bertha was educated in the Darlington County School District. After moving to NC, she was employed by Thomasville Furniture. Her passion, however, was caregiving wherein she was able to provide quality and compassionate care to families for over 35 years through assisted living.
Bertha loved to cook and feed everyone she met. She never met a stranger and was not afraid to speak her mind.
Bertha became a member of Mt. Nebo Holiness Church early in life. She later became a member of Love Fellowship and New Hope Holiness Church. She also attended New Beginnings Christian Church.
Bertha was preceded in death by her spouse, Richard Johnson; sisters, Susanna Chambers, Dorothy Hampton and Frances Taylor; and brothers, Robert, Dock, Jr., Isaac, and Earnest McKay.
She is survived by her one and only son, Arthur McKay, Sr. of the city; grandchildren, Arthur McKay, Jr. and Anita (Anthony) Lee; great-grandchildren, Alijah, Amari, Anah, Brendan, Aaliyah, and Anthony, Jr.; sister, Katie Carpenter; brothers, Moses McKay and Charles (Brenda) McKay; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends.
A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at Russell Funeral Home.
Private funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 18, 2020.
