Obituary

Our precious Aunt, Ms. Bertha "Tot" Crockett of 1137-A N Cameron Avenue, went to be with the Lord on November 30, 2012 after a sudden and unexpected death. She was born May 10, 1924 in Lancaster, SC to the late Rosa & Charlie Crockett, Sr. In addition to her parents; she was also preceded in death by a foster son; five sisters, Elizabeth, Maggie, Rosa, Mary and Ruth; and four brothers, James, John, Sam, and Charlie "Bud" Jr.

She attended public school in Lancaster, SC. She was employed with Wright & Hughes (later Piedmont Leaf Tobacco Co) and Sartin's Cleaners of Winston Salem.

Though she never gave birth, she was a very motherly and nurturing "angel" for her siblings and family. Forgoing her education, she left school at an early age to take care of her younger siblings while her parents worked. Later in life she would not only help with the nurturing of her nieces/nephews and the many great- and great, great nieces/nephews, but became a foster parent and was always taking in and/or helping others "get back on their feet."

Because of her love, care and compassion, she leaves to cherish very fond memories her devoted friend/brother-in-law, Roosevelt Clark of W-S, NC; devoted nieces/caregivers, Louise Wright, Sharon Humphries (June), Johnnie Mae and Ninetta Crockett all of W-S, NC; she also had several other devoted nieces, Lizzie Wilson (Lonnie), Janie Murray, Mary Lou, Carolyn C. Harris, Beverly Wall (Reginald), Lizzie Jones of VA, Patricia Cain, Pamela Weaver (Wilson), Kelly Crockett, Leslie Wallace all of W-S, NC; nephews, Calvin Foxworth of VA, Raymond Crockett and several great- and great-great nieces and nephews located in NC, DC, and VA; and a devoted god-daughter, Carolyn Foust of VA.

Our "Aunt Tot" was much more than an Aunt to us. She was another Mother we could turn to, confide in, and be led by. We all have lost our "Mother" for she was our mother in the absence of our birth mothers and feel a genuine loss; for to lose one mother is a tragedy, but to lose two is more than a child should have to bear. We thank God for sharing His Angel with us and we pray that since she was the last of a great Legacy of the Crockett Family, that we can take the reins to be what she instilled in us to be and carry on in a way that will do her proud.

Funeral services will be held at 12noon Friday, December 7, 2012 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until 12noon on Friday at the Chapel.
