Mr. Beaufort Orrell Bailey, 84, son of Armstead and Maude Bailey was born February 16, 1934 in Walnut Cove, North Carolina. He departed this earthly life on February 22, 2018 at the Hospice Palliative Care in Greensboro, North Carolina surrounded by family and friends.
Mr. Bailey attended the public schools of Walnut Cove, North Carolina, and at the age of 14, his family relocated to Winston Salem, where he attended and graduated from Atkins High School. Upon graduation from Atkins, he enrolled in Winston Salem State Teacher's College (now WSSU) where he received his BS degree in Education and later a Master's degree from North Carolina Central University.
Many of his early teaching years were in the Washington, North Carolina public schools. He later became the Media Director at Winston Salem State University, and retired from that position on July 1, 1993 after 35 years of service to the State of North Carolina.
Beaufort Bailey was best known for being elected to the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Board of Education where he served two four-year terms. Beaufort was the only black member of the City-County Board during his terms. He was elected to the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners in 2002, and to a second term in 2006. He was a life time member of the NAACP and a member of the Urban League (while serving for many years on the Board of Directors). He was a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., where he was initiated in 1954 and served for 64 years.
Beaufort was also a lifetime member of the Winston Salem State University National Alumni Association (while also having served as president for several terms). While president, he was best known for restoration of the Atkins Home, and getting a custom license plate through the NC Division of Motor Vehicles.
Beaufort was baptized and reared in the Baileytown Christian Church in Walnut Cove, NC. He later became a member of Cleveland Avenue Christian Church, and his final membership was at Saint Phillips Moravian Church in Winston Salem, NC.
He was preceded in death by his parents; eight brothers and sisters. He leaves to cherish most loving and dear memories, his loving wife of 63 years, Pollye Graves Bailey; his daughter, Dr. L'Tanya Joy Bailey; sons Eugene Orrell Bailey, Goley Jock Bailey, Reverend Dr. Nikita Joel Bailey, and twins, Jan Perrin Bailey and Jay Perrie Bailey; 10 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews; and many dear friends, including Mr. Jim Shaw and Mr. Robert Carter.
Services will be held at Greater Church (formally Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church), 5095 Lansing Drive, Winston Salem, NC 27105 on Monday, February 26, 2018. Family Visitation will be held 11:00 A.M.- 12:00 Noon with Services beginning at 12:00 Noon.
