Obituary

Barbara Ann Dark Garrett went to be with her Lord and Savior on August 2, 2025. As a woman of unwavering faith, her life was a testament to the grace and goodness of God. Born on September 25, 1937 to the late Martha Mae and Arthur Odell Dark, Sr., she grew up learning the values of faith, generosity and a deep love of her family.

Barbara was a proud graduate of Carver High School. She continued her education at Winston-Salem State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She later received a Master of Education degree from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. For three decades as a dedicated math and science educator in Rockingham County Schools, she made a positive impact on countless students.

Barbara was married to her beloved late husband, Bobby Z. Garrett. Together, they built a beautiful life and a thriving business. Garrett's Convenience Store was dedicated to serving the African-American community in the city.

At the age of 12 years old, Barbara accepted Christ at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Her life was a reflection of her profound faith. As a longtime member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, she nurtured her spiritual journey through her membership in the Sarah Sisters Missionary Group and the Senior Usher Board. She was committed to developing a deep understanding of the word of God through her weekly attendance of the Monday Evening Bible Study. Her quiet strength and steadfast faith were a source of inspiration to all who knew her. In addition to her faith, Barbara will be remembered for her strength, her intellect, and her generosity. She found great joy in classical music, travel and spending time with her family.
