Obituary

Mrs. Barbara Thompson Carter, 62, was born on September 7, 1949 in Winston-Salem, NC to Robert L. Thompson, Sr. and Mary Hall Thompson. She transitioned to glory on Friday, January 13, 2012, in Avon, Indiana.

Barbara attended the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools and Winston-Salem State University.
Barbara was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a compassionate woman of God who always had kind words for everyone. She loved and honored her family, church family and extended family. Barbara encouraged everyone with scriptures, prayers and her words of wisdom.
Barbara retired from AT&T with 27 years of service. She was also a former employee of Martin University in Indiana where she served as an office administrator. She was a dedicated member of Northside New Era Missionary Baptist Church in Indiana where she served as chairwoman of the Deaconess Ministry, member of the Senior Choir, Sunday School, Greeting Card Ministry, Vacation Bible School, and the Women's Ministry.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Thompson; her brothers, Robert L. Thompson, Jr., Aaron Thompson and Christopher Thompson; mother-in-law, Thelma Carter, and sister-in-law, Barbara Carter.

Barbara is survived by her devoted husband of 38 years, Raymond D. Carter, Jr.; daughter, Erika (James) Corbin; son, Antonio (Carolyn) Carter; and grandchildren, Leairra Carter and James Corbin. Her other survivors include her father, Robert L. Thompson, Sr.; brothers, Willie Thompson, Charles Thompson, Jimmie Thompson and Ronald Thompson; sisters, Portia (Ron) Ellerbe and Gloria T. Robbson; sisters-in-law, Karolyn Thompson, Ann (Al) Duckett and Brenda Carter; brother-in-law, John Carter; cherished aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, extended families and very special friends, "The Famous Seven."

The homegoing celebration will be conducted at 12noon Saturday, January 21, 2012 at Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church, 1435 E. 4th Street W-S, NC. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 11am until 12noon on Saturday at the Church.
