Austina Norris Blackmon, daughter of George E. Norris, Sr. and Lillie Mae Felton Norris, was born in Winston-Salem, NC on September 15, 1933. She departed this life on Sunday, March 3, 2019 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home surrounded by family.
She attended the local public schools and graduated from Winston-Salem Teachers' College majoring in Elementary Education and minoring in Music. She taught school in Liberty, NC; North Wilkesboro, NC; and Newark, NJ. In addition to teaching, she was passionate about music and was the organist for over 50 years for several churches including First Institutional Baptist Church which later became United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church after merging with West End Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her infant brother, George E. Norris, Jr.; and her grandson, Terez Blackmon.
She leaves to cherish her memories the love of her life, Robert Blackmon; two daughters, Randon Blackmon Pender and Timika Blackmon; three sons, Robert C. Blackmon, Vincent J. Blackmon, and Donald G. Blackmon, Sr. all of Winston-Salem, NC; grandchildren, Travis E. Pender, Sr. (Ericka), Broddrick R. Pender (Amanda), Justin D. Pender (Jurina), Jason B. Pender (Kimberly), Brittney M. Blackmon, Ashley B. Blackmon, Justin Blackmon, Brendon Blackmon, Tera Littlejohn, Jr., Tiffany Littlejohn, Donald G. Blackmon, Jr., and Jamie Blackmon; 27 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; a devoted cousin, Jimmy Crockett; God-son, David West; God-daughter, Veronica McCullough-Bennett; dear friends, Mary Carpenter and Bonnie Henderson; and host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 12noon Friday, March 8, 2019 at United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church. The family visitation will be held from 11:00am until 12noon on Friday at the Church.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to Dr. Nancy Denizard-Thompson of Wake Forest Baptist Health for the care extended to Mrs. Blackmon.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winston-Salem State University Music Department.
