Our beloved Audra Mae Adams, 83, was born October 25, 1940, to the late James and Mary McCullough. She transitioned from this life to her heavenly home on Friday, November 10, 2023, at Atrium Health-Wake Forest Baptist Hospital after an extended illness.
Audra retired from working for many years in various jobs. Audra's jobs consisted of Piedmont Leaf Tobacco Company, First Citizens Bank with their janitorial service, and she spent many years as a housekeeper for a prominent attorney and his family in Winston Salem, NC.
Affectionately known to her family and friends as "Archie Mae" or "Queen Mae", Audra loved her family and always wanted them around. She was the aunt that always had the kids at her house, and where holiday dinners and family get-togethers always took place. She loved entertaining and having her family near her. Audra was a fun-loving aunt and if you knew her you would know her favorite past time was eating chicken, you could not visit her without bringing her some fried chicken.
Before moving to Willow Valley Convalescent Center, she was a resident of Piedmont Circle where she resided for forty plus years. She was known in the neighborhood as the candy lady. At her house you could always get a cold soda, chips, candy, and sometimes a good old hot dog. Audra was well known and respected by the kids and adults in the neighborhood, and she would not hesitate to get them straight if they were doing something wrong.
Audra was a member of New Direction Movement Cathedral. She loved her church and her sister-in-law, Pastor Essie C. McCullough. As a member of New Direction Audra worked on the nursing board.
Audra was preceded in death by her parents, James (Mary) McCullough Sr.; her husband, Steve Adams; two sisters, Annie Lee Wilson and Barbara Jean McCullough; and one brother, James McCullough Jr.
Audra leaves to cherish her memories one daughter, Valerie O'Neal; three grandchildren, Katrina O'Neal, Terrance O'Neal, and Willie O'Neal; five great-grandsons, Maurice Hughes, Jeremy Hughes, Lequan Gatewood, Marquis O'Neal, and Jamal O'Neal; one great-granddaughter, Jermya Hughes; five great-great-grandsons, Braylen Hughes, Gabriel Hughes, Davyn Jones, Genesis Hughes and Wize Hughes; one great-great-granddaughter, Wizdom Rhyne; one brother, Alexander (Essie) McCullough; sister-in-law, Levonia McCullough; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives. and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00noon Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at New Direction Movement Cathedral with Pastor Essie McCullough officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Gur Cemetery, Kernersville, NC. The family visitation will be held from 11:30 am until 12:00noon on Tuesday at the Church.
