Mr. Artis R. Woods, Sr., 66, a devoted family man and friend, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, September 16, 2015. He was born in Winston-Salem NC on July 2, 1949, attended the WS Forsyth County Schools, and graduated from Atkins High School and Florida A & M University.

Artis retired from the United States Marines after serving over 30 years as well as retiring from the State of North Carolina after serving 20 years where he held several law enforcement positions including serving as a Winston-Salem Police Officer, Forsyth County Sheriff, and Campus Police Officer at Winston-Salem State University.

Artis was a 33 degree PHA Mason, a member of the 30th District Bivouac Lodge #503, and a Past Potetant of Sethos Temple.

Artis was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Mangle Lee Richardson and Rosa Lee (Woods) Whitlock; and his two sisters, Laura and Ann Davis.

He is survived by his beloved father, Lester Davis Sr.; loving sister, Audrey Jones; brothers, Lester Davidson, Lester and Keith Davis; children, Kenneth Woods (Shanetta), Artis R. Woods Jr. (Tracey), Trelane Hicks (Devan) ,Regina Scott (Demi'), Bushnell Brown, Ahmad Woods and Marquita Collick (Arian);and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and a special friend, Ernestine Byrd.


Homegoing services will be held at 12noon Thursday, September 24, 2015 at Grace Presbyterian Church USA, 3901 Carver School Road, W-S, NC with Pastor Toure Marshall officiating. The family visitation will be held from 11:00am until 12noon on Thursday at the Church. Burial will be held at 10:00am Friday, September 25, 2015 in Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC. Masonic/Shrine rites will be held at 6:00pm Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel.
