"An officer and a gentleman," captures the life and memory of Artie Andrew Amos, born September 17, 1948 to the late Josephine Amos Caldwell and Leavy Beal, Sr. in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He was a product of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, graduating from Anderson High School. He was a member of the ROTC and graduated cum laude from North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University.
Upon graduating from NC A&T and being commissioned as an officer, he entered the army and served as an officer in the 82
nd
Airborne, commanding a tank platoon. He was later commissioned as a Captain. After honorable discharge from the army, Artie began work in personnel with RJ Reynolds Archer. During this pivotal time in his life, he met and married his wife of 43 years, Saundra Pridgen Amos and through this union, welcomed their daughter Pridgen Jeannette Amos Green. Subsequently, Artie left Reynolds to work in personnel at Schlitz and the Stroh Brewery. He retired from the North Carolina Employment Security Commission. Artie was a brilliant, financially savvy man of unimaginable strength, which he displayed throughout his illness.
He showed his friends and family how to transition with ease, grace, humor, and dignity. He was a genuine man, who did not like fanfare, but enjoyed simplicity: movies, jokes, the news, food, dancing, time with family and friends, beach vacations, competitive card playing, and bowling. He bowled a perfect game of 300 and earned a ring for his accomplishment. His trophy table displayed all of his many bowling tournament wins. Artie's personality, zest for life and passions awarded him many friends, whom he cherished and maintained throughout his life: Dennis Lewis, Waymon Moody, Wilbur Peoples, Rudy Hill, Henry Ragin, and Bobby Davis among numerous others.
Preceded in death by his mother, Josephine Amos Caldwell; father, Leavy Beal Sr.; and brother Leavy Jr., Artie is survived by his wife, Saundra Jeannette Pridgen Amos; daughter, Pridgen Jeannette Amos Green (Keith); grandsons, Keith Jerome Amos Green and Andrew Jamahl Amos Green of Winston-Salem. He is also survived by two sisters, Delphine Jones of Winston-Salem and LaVerne Miller (Chester) of Massachusetts; three brothers, Ronald Beal (Valerie) of Louisiana; Malcolm Beal of Florida, and Edward Beal of Massachusetts. Additionally, he leaves three aunts to cherish his memory, Viola Ward, Carolyn Amos, and Gwendolyn Cole (William) of Winston-Salem; sister-in-law, Carol Pridgen Henry (Fred), Elaine Pridgen Carter, and a brother-in-law, Isaac Clarence Pridgen (Pamela) of Whiteville, and a host of other relatives and friends, including his goddaughter Cheyann Christine Henry of Southern Pines.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the NC A&T State University Endowment Fund or the American Heart Association.
