Arthur Garfield Bowman, 93, was born on August 1, 1922 in Thomasville, NC. He was the only son of Lena Bowman Matthews. He departed this life and entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 after a long five year battle with health issues.
In August of 1953, Arthur married Lellar Davis and from that union, Arthur was blessed with two children, Albert and Linda.
"A.G." as he was often called, attended grade school in Davie County and transitioned to Winston Salem/Forsyth County schools where he graduated from Atkins High School. He worked as a machinist for Tyco Industries (formerly AMP, Inc.) until his retirement. He was also employed previously at Safe Bus Company and Chrysler Motor Company in Detroit, Michigan. Throughout his life he constantly "tinkered" with machines and cars keeping them in tip-top shape.
Arthur accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. He was a loyal and dedicated member of Goler Metropolitian A.M.E. Zion church for many years and he also attended Smith Grove A.M.E. Zion church.
He served in the US Navy. He lived in the Castle Heights neighborhood for over 25 years.
He was preceded in death by his son, Albert Kenneth Bowman; and his mother.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Lellar Davis Bowman; daughter, Dr. Linda Bowman Hopson both of Walkertown, NC; one granddaughter, Adrienne (Walter) Terrell of Charlotte, NC; Sherry Maxwell of Winston-Salem, NC; two brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law, George (Fredonia) Davis and Jesse (Josephine) Davis of Rock Hill, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30pm Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel, 822 Carl Russell Ave. W-S, NC with Pastor Ronald Speas officiating. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the funeral hour from 12noon until 12:30pm on Tuesday at the Chapel. Interment will be held at 2:00pm Wednesday, November 18, 2015 in Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC.
