Anthony Keith Smallwood, 62 was born on March 5, 1957, in Manhattan, New York and spent his early childhood in Washington DC, Capitol Heights, MD (fka Beaver Heights, MD), and grew up in Columbus, OH. He exchanged his earthly life for eternal life on March 20, 2019.
Anthony, who was affectionately known as "Kick" or "Tony", received his education by attending Fort Hayes and Capital University for music in Columbus, OH. He later attended Truck Driving School in Greensboro, NC, was a truck driver by trade, and was formerly employed with Schwerman Trucking Company. However, the greater part of his life was spent as a Professional Drummer.
In his own words, "I started by listening to the radio and really listening to the beat. That got me picking up pots and pans." His sister D'Nece said that he really started his career tapping on his high chair and while in school tapping on the desk which constantly got him in trouble. His musical passion came from his parents, Edith (soprano opera singer) and Melvyn (alto saxophone-jazz musician). "My father bought me a snare drum in 1969 and my musical career has not missed a beat."
"Kick" was dedicated to his profession at a very early age. He has played with many bands becoming a professional at the age of 14. After accepting Christ in is life at around 18, he traveled with a young "radical" singing group called "The Christian People" founded by Cameron (D'nece) Hunter, who would become his brother-in-law 10 years later, along with his sister, Edith Lynn Ray and family friend, Trina Hazley. While home base was Columbus, Ohio he was a devoted member of Gospel Tabernacle United Holy Church where he introduced the drums to the church. Later he would become a member of Rehoboth Temple Church of Christ. After relocating to Burlington Anthony became a faithful member of New Covenant United Holy Church.
Other bands he played for were The Apostolic Clefts and Gospel Truth of Columbus, OH; Brenda Clark and Freedom Express, Gospel Revelators of Burlington, NC; Nantucket, and Shirley Caesar of Raleigh NC; Jessie Dixon; Phase Band of Winston Salem, NC, just to name a few.
In 1981, he moved to New York and lived in Staton Island for 2 years. There, he played drums with a band called King David and worked Security for Hunter College. Kick loved people and no matter what he was going through, he always had room for others and laughter.
He was preceded in death by his father, Melvyn Windsor Smallwood; and his one and only brother, Robert Edward "Bobby" Daniels, in which they share the same date of passing- March 20 th .
