Mrs. Annie Mae McConnell was born to Willie Grier and Ellen Grier on May 3, 1930 in Greenville, SC. They relocated to Winston-Salem, NC where she grew up and received her education. As a young woman, Annie met the love of her life, Thomas P. McConnell. They married on September 14, 1948 and to this union was born 5 children.
They moved to Detroit, MI to begin a new life. Annie was a devoted wife and mother. She taught strong Christian values to her children and was happiest when surrounded by her family. Integrity, faith, and prayer were foundational seeds which were planted daily. Serving others brought her joy. She was an excellent cook. Her sweet potato pie was phenomenal.
Children were drawn to her because of her loving spirit. She enjoyed interacting with young people, so it was no surprise that she chose to become a paraprofessional teacher in the Detroit Public School System for years.
Annie made Jesus her choice at a very early age. During the span of her 88 years she served the Lord with gladness. For many years she labored at True Gospel Tabernacle Church in Detroit, MI under the leadership of Pastor Larry Dallas as youth leader, minister, and choir member. In her senior years she returned to Winston-Salem, NC and reconnected with First Waughtown MBC, Dr. Dennis W. Bishop, Pastor. Minister McConnell was known for her powerful messages about God's love. Both young and old were touched by the anointed word birthed out of her personal experience. For many years she was faithful to travel with the church supporting Pastor Bishop whom she always called her son. Mother McConnell was a member of several choirs and the prayer band.
Minister Annie was a loving, kind, humble woman of God. A dynamic teacher and a true Mother in Zion, will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. What a legacy to leave behind. We will never forget that radiant smile which was a reflection of her inner beauty.
As it says in I Corinthians 13:8, "Love never fails"
Mother McConnell was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas P. McConnell; and three sons, Willie R. Grier, Thomas McConnell, II, and Curtis T. McConnell.
She leaves to cherish her memories one daughter, Ardelia F. (Josh) Bacon; two sons, Michael A. (Sabrina) McConnell and Andre (Portia) McConnell; one stepdaughter, Diane Oates; one stepson, Larry Hart; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
