Mrs. Annie Loraine Hairston Watson, 83 transitioned from her earthly to heavenly home on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC after a brief illness. Her family and friends referred to her as "Loraine, Annie, Lo, grandma, Watson, and/or Mrs. Watson"; albeit the name, there was a common characterization of the person-a sweet, soft-spoken, Christian, and giving lady.
Mrs. Watson was born July 27, 1925 in Winston-Salem, NC where she graduated from Atkins High School and Kate B. Reynolds School of Nursing. Her career path began with serving as the first nurse to the Fultz quadruplets in Madison, NC. She later moved to Brooklyn, NY where she worked as head pediatric nurse at Jewish Hospital (Interfaith Medical Center) until her retirement. It was in Brooklyn that she found love and married Harold E. Watson.
Mrs. Watson was a faithful and dedicated member of Concord Baptist Church in Brooklyn where Dr. Gardner Taylor pastured for many years. She rejoiced with those who rejoiced, and made a special effort to remember family and friends' birthdays. Loraine was a true humanitarian with a heart of gold. Helping others was her passions. When she returned to Winston-Salem, NC in 2004, she joined St. Paul United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Mrs. Watson leaves to cherish her memories a beloved daughter, Sharen Watson Jordan (Rebop); a grandson, Marcus Jordan; one sister-in-law, Nellie Chavis of Philadelphia, PA; nieces, Cynthia Chavis of Durham, NC, Lorraine Chavis and Mildred McCollum of Philadelphia, PA; nephews, Sylvius, Christopher Chavis, and Kenneth Brown of Philadelphia, PA; her extended family includes: Lula Morrison, Constance Johnson (Victor), L. Kim Johnson, Edward Morrison (Jamie), and Robert Long (Wilhelmina); a god-son, Donnel Hale of Los Angeles, CA and a god-daughter, Donna Williams of Brooklyn, NY; additional special friends are, Ella Dula Williams of Brooklyn, NY, Evelyn Culpepper of Queensvillage, NY, Ellen Smalls, Tsay Lynde, and Hebie Lawrence of Brooklyn, NY, Altama Hale of Roanoke, VA, Bea Thrower of Albany, GA and Hazel Johnson of Winston-Salem, NC; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 12Noon Monday, February 9, 2009 from the St. Paul United Methodist with Reverend Donald Jenkins officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until 12Noon on Monday at the Church.
