Obituary

Andrew M. Wilkes was born October 28, 1918 in Clover, SC to Plummer and Janie Wilkes. He was one of seven children.
Andrew attended Atkins High School and after school he moved to Detroit, MI where he worked for the automotive industry. Andrew returned to Winston-Salem, NC in the 70's and worked for Field Crest Towels for several years.

Andrew loved playing bridge. He organized the first duplicate bridge club, called the Kings and Queens. They won many trophies and taught bridge at the YMCA. Some of his bridge players were Charles Gadson and Rosetta Hauser.

He was a faithful member of Grace Presbyterian Church USA where he was a member of the choir and many other organizations. Andrew was a great cook. He loved to prepare meals for his friends and was a great baker of gourmet meals.
After an illness, Andrew resided and continued to live at Springwood Care Center for 10 years where he would sing to the residents.

Following a brief period of illness, Andrew transitioned on May 11, 2016.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by all six siblings, Johnny Robert Wilkes, Napoleon Wilkes, Sr., and Marshall Wilkes all formerly of the city, Lillian Yarborough formerly of New York, NY, Daisy Wilkes formerly of Stamford, CT, and Herbert Wilkes formerly of Statesville, NC.

In addition to his immediate family he leaves to cherish his fond memories devoted nieces, Veronica Conner of the city, Ethelyne Wilkes of Washington, DC, and Patricia Shepard of the city; sisters-in-law, Gertrude Wilkes, Eleanor Tyndall, and Sam Howard all of the city; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at Grace Presbyterian Church USA with Reverend Toure' Marshall officiating. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family visitation will be held from 12:30pm until 1:00pm on Tuesday at the Church.
