Obituary

Andrew Daudharry Maharajh, a source of strength and inspiration while on earth, has taken his rightful place among the angels in heaven, beside his wife of 63 years. Andrew was born in Trinidad, West Indies to Indian immigrants. He was an outstanding student and won a national scholarship to a prestigious High School in Trinidad.  In his quest for higher education he attended Indiana Technical University where he obtained bachelor degrees in Chemical and Civil Engineering. While pursuing his Masters of Science degree in Chemical Engineering at Bucknell University, he met and married the love of his life, Jeanette Catherine Bowling.  They lived in Trinidad from 1953 to 1986 where they raised five children, eventually returning to the United States after retiring from Texaco Trinidad Inc., to join their children and grandchildren.

Andrew was an excellent athlete who participated in track and field, soccer, and cricket. He was an avid golfer well into his 90s. He started and ran the Training Department of one of the largest Texaco oil refineries in the world. In this capacity, he was instrumental in employing and educating many young men in apprenticeship programs, which provided unique opportunities that were otherwise unattainable. At the end of his career, he was the Texaco Chief Safety Officer for several years. He was a lifelong educator and taught night school at the technical college in Trinidad. In retirement, he became a substitute teacher for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System.

Andrew was the third of eight siblings: Banna, Harold, Narrad, Poras, Jagdeo (sister), Sookdeo and the youngest, Peter, of Vancouver, Canada his only living sibling.

Andrew's true loves were his family, his fascination with religion – eastern and western and of course golf. Born a Hindu, he converted to Christianity at age 12 due to the influence of his Godfather, Garnet McCarthy, the Mayor of Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and became a devout member of the Anglican (Episcopal) Church for the rest of his life.

He will be dearly missed by his children, Pateah Maharajh East (spouse, Teddy Lee East), Jeanette Maharajh Balwah (spouse, Wallace J. Balwah), Dr. Garnet D. Maharajh (mothers of his children, Patty Hoyle and Robin Yaggi), Dr. Roberta G. Maharajh, and Shakuntala A. Maharajh. In addition, he embraced the following as his own, Cynthia Ramkalawan (niece of Trinidad W.I), Geeta Maharaj, Dr. Kamal Dyal, Santee Sitalal Dyal Banwarie and Dyanand Kesraj (deceased); he will also be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Andrew (Dana), Andrea (Davy) and Alicia (Omar) East, Garnet (Amanda), Dr. Elizabeth (Joshua) and Arthur Balwah, Patterson and Reynolds Maharajh, Connelly Yaggi Maharajh, Sarah and Julian Beck; Ria, Rhianna and Christopher Banwarie; his guidance and wisdom will leave a huge void in the lives of his great-grandchildren,  Jaidyn, Justyce, Jaymison, Kaisyn, Amare, Julian, Alistair, Joseph, Emma Margaret and Alexander Ramchand who will miss being sung to in Hindi, by his Papa; his sole surviving sibling, Peter S. Maharajh (Anna); his brothers-in-law,  Andrew Bowling, Richard Bowling IV, Thomas Barnett and Randy McLelland; his sisters-in-law, Anna, Treana, Jane and Pat; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and other relatives, in the United States, Canada, England, Trinidad, and other parts of the world.

Throughout his life, he was instrumental in fostering a multi-racial and multi-cultural family and would constantly express thanks for all the blessings he received in this life. We will forever be enriched in our hearts with the beautiful memories we have of our beloved patriarch, a true Prince among men.
