Amos Evander Pigford transitioned peacefully Sunday, September 13, 2020. Amos was born in Fairmont, North Carolina on April 8, 1930. His parents were David Pigford and Bessie Pittman Pigford. At an early age, he and his family moved to Winston-Salem, NC. After attending the public schools, he entered into the United States Army and served in the Korean War. Amos was honorably discharged from the US Army in 1954. Upon his return, he was walking down the street, in his uniform, and met the love of his life, Thelma. Thelma thought he was good looking and invited Amos to watch television. Her family was the only family on the block with a television in 1954. He often told the story of how he was only going to watch TV but ended up married. Amos and Thelma were married for 56 years. To this union, three children were born.
Amos retired from RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company in 1987 after 42 years. He loved to say that he only missed a half a day of work due to being sick. He and Thelma enjoyed gardening, traveling, and entertaining their family and friends. Their home was open to anyone and Amos loved helping people. He enjoyed trips to the beach, fishing, and sharing his catch with family members. He was affectionately known as "Pa Pa" by his grandchildren. One of his greatest joys was spending time with them and he often volunteered at their schools. Amos shared war stories of his time in Korea which many loved to hear. Thelma spoiled him with delicious meals daily which he adored. He had a love for nice cars and kept his impeccably clean. Amos and Thelma were members of Union Chapel Baptist Church where he enjoyed being Thelma's Assistant Sunday School Teacher and a blessing to the many host committees he served on.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Thelma Pigford; son, William Pigford (Sid); his parents, David and Bessie Pittman Pigford; his brother, John Thomas Pigford, Sr.; sister, Earnestine Wardlow; and brother, David Pigford.
