Alphonso Witherspoon of Peachtree Street departed this life Sunday, May 4, 2008 at Forsyth Medical Center following a brief illness. Mr. Witherspoon was born in Winston-Salem, NC to Floyd and Ellaree M. Witherspoon. He was a product of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.
Mr. Witherspoon served in the United States Army and was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, Whitaker Park. He was a member of Sale Lodge #139 and a dedicated trustee of New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Left to cherish memories are his wife of 46 years, Mrs. Ann Witherspoon of the home; four children, Cynthia (Luther) Burden and Veronica Williams of Winston-Salem, NC, Ricky (Treva) Williams of Houston, TX, and Tony Williams of Durham, NC; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Leon (Bernice), Jerome (Peggy), and Claude Witherspoon all of Winston-Salem, NC; three sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and many friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Witherspoon will be held at 2pm Friday, May 9, 2008 from the New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. Samuel J. Cornelius officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held at 7pm Thursday, May 8, 2008 from the New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church.
