In Loving Memory of Alma LaVern Blaylock

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Alma LaVern Blaylock who departed this world on June 2, 2025 at the age of 56. LaVern's life was a testament to love, resilience, and dedication leaving a profound impact on all who had the privilege to know her. She was born on August 13, 1968 in Winston-Salem, NC to her parents Julia Mae Blaylock and James Edward Blaylock. LaVern embraced life with a strong-willed spirit and a heart full of compassion, creating a legacy that will endure through the lives she touched.
A Life of Love and Devotion
LaVern was a woman of remarkable strength and unwavering commitment. Her journey was one of service and grace, whether in nurturing her family, forging deep friendships, or contributing to her community. LaVern's life was filled with moments that brought joy to others, and her love was a guiding light that shaped the lives of those around her.
Family and Relationships
At the heart of LaVern's life was her cherished family. She was a devoted mother, sister, auntie, and grandmother whose love and care created a foundation of warmth and stability. LaVern is survived by her two beautiful children, LaVeta and Gerry who will continue to honor her life by carrying forward the values and love she instilled in them. Her home was always a place of laughter, shared stories, and boundless affection.
Dedication to Christ, Education, and Career
LaVern was raised in the church and was baptized at an early age by Rev. Oscar B. Cook at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church and was later pastored by Bishop John Walker in Winston-Salem NC. Later in life she joined and attended New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church where she enjoyed sermons from the then appointed pastor, Reverend Samuel J. Cornelius.
LaVern was educated in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School system and graduated from Carver High School in 1986. While a student there, she excelled academically and was on the women's basketball team where she became a lover of all sports.
In her professional life, LaVern was known for her dedication and integrity. LaVern began working at age 16 with various jobs and ending with her career in the airline industry by working for American Airlines for the last 18 years. She was marked by excellence and a genuine commitment to her work ethic that was admired by friends and colleagues alike.
A Final Goodbye
Though Alma LaVern Blaylock is no longer physically with us, her spirit remains ever-present. LaVern was proceeded in death by both parents; and her sister, Paula Belton. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, LaVeta Blaylock; son, Gerry (Shalondra) Hairston; three grandchildren, Geziyiah, GeMir, and GeMari Hairston; her loving siblings, Reginald (Valorie) Blaylock, Cheryl Blaylock, Ronald (Petra) Blaylock, Gary Blaylock, and Albert Michaux; her nieces and nephews, Shawnta, Julian, Otisha, Roderick, Brandon, Garrett, Alana, Chadd, Jasmine, Hezekiah, and Reginald. Lastly, she is beloved by her many cousins and a host of close friends. Her life was a beacon of love and kindness and the memories of her will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew her. As we say farewell, we celebrate the extraordinary life she lived and the blessings she brought to us all. Rest in peace, Alma LaVern Blaylock. You will be deeply missed, but your legacy of love will endure forever.
Funeral services will be held at 12noon Saturday, June 7, 2025 at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. The family visitation will be held from 11:00am until 12noon on Saturday at the Church.
