Obituary

Allean Degilda Sims came into the world on July, 4, 1947.  She was the second of fourteen children born from the union of Roosevelt and Vernetta Sims, both deceased.

Allean's formative years were spent in the segregated and overcrowded schools in Winston-Salem.  Because of this, not only during the week, she and her classmates attended school on the weekend in shifts.

Determined to get an education, Allean excelled in both academics and sports.  She graduated from John W. Paisley High School in 1965 and Winston-Salem State in 1969. She received a degree in Physical Education and Sociology.  Upon completion of her studies, Allean soon joined the Army and completed her basic training at Fort McClellan in Alabama.

From 1971-1973 Allean taught at the following schools: Allen High School in Asheville, NC, a private school for girls. She taught P.E. at Anderson High School and Griffith Elementary.  Although she enjoyed teaching, Allean wanted to become an advocate for her community and joined the WSPD in 1974.  She also trained as a firefighter, when women were not encouraged to train.  Allean would soon be recognized as one of the first African-American Women in the detective division of the WSPD.

After 25 years of service, Allean retired from the Detective Division of the WSPD in 1998.  She has since been recognized for the following: 1988 Charlie Thomason Award-Outstanding Service to Youth, 2006 Hall of Fame-WSSU Meritorious, 2010 Living Legend Award-Hanes Hosiery Recreation Center, 2011 Honoree of Black History Month City of W-S, recognized for one of the First African-American Female Detectives-WSPD, 2012, 2017 Profile of Prominence Achievement Award, the C.C. McGee Service to Youth Award-Coalition on Drug Abuse, recognized throughout the CIAA as the Ultimate Fan and "Momma Ram" WSSU.

After a traumatic spinal cord injury in 2009, Allean rededicated her life to Christ and continued her worship at Friendship Baptist Church. She continued to be a pillar of her community by providing leadership, knowledge, and an unwavering commitment to those she came in contact with.  Allean continued to be a strong supporter of her beloved sons, granddaughters, family and friends.  Upon her passing Saturday, October 27, 2018, the tv was tuned to the WSSU/SHAW football game. Although WSSU lost, the VICTORY was Allean's in the end.   Her Philosophy of Life was: Put GOD first and create a legacy of love and respect for others, as well as yourself!

In addition to her parents, Allean was preceded in death by her siblings, Vernon, Sr., Teflon, and Patsy.

Allean Degilda Sims is survived by her sons, Garland G. Gill, Jr. and Jonathan C. Sims; granddaughters, Mikaila T. Gill and Lauren O. Gill; siblings, Millie(Rayvon), Roosevelt(Lolita), Ether, Stevie(Rose), Bennie, Gerard, and Joy; and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 12noon Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church.  The family visitation will be held from 11:00am until 12noon on Saturday at the Church.
