Obituary

Alfred Alvin Poe peacefully departed this life to join the Lord on Friday, February 14, 2025, a date that coincided with Valentine's Day, surrounded by the warmth and love of his family. Born on May 8, 1942, in High Point, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Katie Friday and was raised by his mother alongside his step-father, Calvin Friday. Alfred enjoyed a fulfilling marriage that lasted 51 years, during which he and his spouse welcomed three cherished children into their lives. He completed his education at William Penn High School and initially worked for the City of High Point for a year before embarking on a collegiate journey. He earned a bachelor's degree from North Carolina College, now known as North Carolina Central University, on a tennis scholarship, and furthered his education by pursuing a master's degree from Morehead State University in Kentucky, as well as pursuing his Elementary Principalship at Bowie State University.

In the community, Alfred was affectionately recognized as "Coach Poe," a title that reflected his deep commitment to sports and education. Following his graduation, he took on the role of tennis coach at Livingstone College, which marked the beginning of a distinguished career in education and athletics. He later served as a physical and health educator and coach at George Washington Carver High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he eventually rose to the position of Athletic Director after a remarkable 37-year tenure with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System. Throughout his life, Alfred garnered numerous accolades, including being named to the All CIAA Tennis team at North Carolina Central, winning the Western District Doubles Tennis Championship at William Penn, and receiving the Coach of the Year award in 1991, 1996, and 1997. His legacy also includes leading teams to three basketball conference championships and achieving notable success in state-level competitions, solidifying his impact on the sports community.

Brother Poe united with Piney Grove Baptist Church on July 25, 2010, and remained a dedicated and faithful member until his health declined. His love for the Lord and commitment to service were evident throughout his years with us. Whereas, he was a devoted servant, actively participating in the Usher's Ministry, the Men's Action Fellowship, and making a lasting impact through his leadership in the Piney Grove Youth Basketball League. His dedication to mentoring and guiding young people was a testament to his generous spirit and love for his community. Whereas, he truly cherished Sunday worship services, finding joy and peace in the presence of the Lord and his church family.

The unwavering commitment, guidance, and affection that Alfred Poe extended to everyone he encountered will remain etched in the memories of those he influenced. His family was the cornerstone of his existence, and he consistently went above and beyond to ensure that his wife, children, and grandchildren received not only care but also unconditional love. Alfred exemplified selflessness, often prioritizing his family's needs above his own, imparting invaluable lessons on strength, humility, and positivity to his children and grandchildren.

Alfred's passing is preceded by the loss of his beloved mother, Katie Friday; his stepfather, Calvin Friday; his cherished grandmother, Pauline Poe; and his grandfather, Alfred Poe. These figures played significant roles in shaping his character and values, which he carried throughout his life. Their influence is reflected in the legacy he leaves behind, characterized by love and resilience.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Carol Poe, and their three children: Alisa Anderson (Damian), Camille Poe, and William Poe, all residing in Winston-Salem. Additionally, he is remembered by his sister, Kathleen Friday of High Point; his brothers, Roscoe (Debra) Friday of Richmond, VA, and Calvin (Judy) Friday of Charlotte, NC; as well as five grandchildren: Naikeesha Poe, Princess Poe, Cierra Campbell, Malachi Poe, and Elijah Poe, all from Winston-Salem. His family also includes a great-grandson, King Coleman; two sisters-in-law, Patricia Cordell of Auburn Hills, Michigan, and Sandra Chavis of Fayetteville, NC, along with numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and a supportive community, including CARVER NATION.
