Alfonza Leon Thompson, known as "Al or Red" passed away on Thursday, February 10, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born October 29, 1946 to the late Evelyn Thompson and James and Fannie Porter. He was employed by the City of Winston-Salem in the Transportation Department and was a member of St. Peter's World Outreach Center.
Surviving are one son, Reginald Cockerham (Tawanna); one grandson, Cassius Cockerham; six sisters, Minister Betty (Elder Rueben) Hash, Iris Barr, Loisjean Wilkins, Emma Parham, Arnita (James) Streater, and Gloria Porter; four brothers, James (Johnsie) Durant, Theodore Porter, Timothy Porter, and Felder Lockhart; a sister-in-law, Helen Porter; a loving and devoted friend, Dr. Francene Hash; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm Friday, February 18, 2011 at St. Peter's World Outreach Center. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 12noon until 1pm on Friday at the Church.
The family would like to thank Dr. Chase and the entire staff at Forsyth Medical Center Stroke Center and medical staff at Whitaker Rehab Center for the excellent care given to our brother.
