Alexander Robert Beaty, Former Assistant City Manager, was the fourth of seven children born to William R. and Dora P. Beaty. Al was born in Winston-Salem, NC on May 23, 1943 and enjoyed 71 years of life. He passed during the early morning hours of August 28, 2014 after a brief illness.
Al attended the Winston-Salem public schools and was an active member of Atkins High School's Alumni Association. He was also a graduate and alumni member of Winston-Salem State University. Upon receiving his bachelor's degree in history, Al taught social studies in Tarboro, NC for five years, where he also coached winning debate teams. He resigned in 1970 and moved back to Winston-Salem where he began the second phase of his career with the Experiment in Self Reliance, where he worked as a Personnel Specialist and then as the Personnel Director. This was followed by positions with the city of Winston-Salem as Manpower Director, Personnel Director, and Assistant City Manager.
Al was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Mrs. Dora P. Beaty; his father, William R. Beaty; and his nephew, Roderick William Beaty.
Surviving with wonderful memories of Al are his two sisters, Mrs. Thelma Beaty Reed of Washington, DC and Mrs. Janice Beaty Hamilton (Gregory) of Severn, MD; four brothers, William R. Beaty, Jr. (Phyllis) of New Haven, CT, John Beaty (Frankie) of Winston-Salem, NC, JP Beaty (Hazel) of Atlanta, GA, and Paul Beaty of Washington, DC; a loving aunt, Mrs. Teretha Milner of Winston-Salem, NC; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; a dedicated companion, Ms. Cheryl Jeffries; very close friends, Ms. Martha Jo Campbell, Mr. Jim Shaw, Mr. Charles Carter, Mr. Thomas Trollinger; and many, many other friends and colleagues.
Memorial services will be held at 11am Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at the Alexander R. Beaty Public Safety Training and Support Center, 1200 Patterson Ave. W-S, NC 27101.
The family would like to thank everyone for all the kind wishes, support, and words of encouragement that we received. We are forever grateful for your love of our brother. When you think of him….just smile….or laugh out loud…that's what he would want.
