Biographical Account of

Albert Rudolph Anderson, Sr. "RUDY"

September 12, 1926 ~ April 27, 2022

Albert Rudolph "Rudy" Anderson, Sr. was the youngest son of William Roscoe Anderson, Sr. and Livia Maud Belcher.  His education included Kimberly Park Elementary School and Atkins High School in Winston-Salem, NC as well as the US Army and Bluefield State College.

He married Flonnie Thomas in 1949 and they became the parents of Albert R. (Goldia) Anderson, Jr., Roscoe Mica Anderson, Raymond Luron Anderson (deceased), and Deirdre Yvette Anderson.  He also leaves behind to celebrate his life his 5 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; beloved sisters-in-law, Jeanette T. Lewis and Mozelle Anderson; nieces, Rayonette Crowder, Barbara Wesley, and Rosalind (Larry) Longino; nephews, Dwight Nago and William Roscoe "Rusty" Anderson, III; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to his son, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Gladys Gill and Roscoe Anderson, Jr.

He was a faithful member of Wentz Memorial United Church of Christ, pastored by Rev. Renee G. Griffin.  He served on the Deacon and Trustee Boards, singing with the Chancel Choir Baritone or Bass, and answering all calls for service on any church ministry.  He was also a Mason and the oldest living member of Olympic Lodge #795.

  • A Champion Husband & Father, a Champion of Mankind
  • Supportive of his wife, whether he understood what she was doing or not. Always said, "Go get'em, Honey."
  • When his daughter, the youngest of his four offsprings, cuts off a huge plait, in front of her head, days before he is to take her to visit her mother at Saint Andrews College in Laurinburg, NC, he gasped, "Your mother is going to……., nevermind, Baby, put on this cap. We'll be alright."
  • Taught his sons to be men with genuine compassions, to be humble, caring, and supportive. His calm in the middle of a storm was contagious.
  • Believed deeply, no matter what happened in life, in keeping family close.
  • His knowledge of the human spirit was vast, and he shared that knowledge with all persons he encountered- young or old, rich or poor.
  • He never met a stranger. Serving others made him strong and inspired those around him.
  • In the midst of challenging situations, this student of mankind, who was educated at Bluefield State College, after serving in the US Army and graduating from Atkins High School, always found the bright light.
  • Married in 1949 to the love of his life-Flonnie Thomas, and they have remained love birds for 72 years.
  • Rudy attended all of his daughter's sports events, and all of her other school activities, praising her for every event. He always kept a pocket full of lifesavers to give her whenever she was disappointed.
  • During his whirlwind life, Rudy never missed any of his wife's plays and even became an actor in several of them.
  • He also never missed a father-son banquet at the YMCA. He just made certain that his boys ate plenty of food before they left home because he knew that the "Y" could not afford to provide the hardy meal it would take to fill them up.
  • Before, during, or after the aforementioned activities, Rudy served as president of Kimberly Park Elementary School PTA when his three sons were students there.
  • Founding member, and Baritone and Bass Singer with the Twin City Choristers and his Church Choir (Wentz Memorial United Church of Christ) for over 50 years.
  • First full-time job was in the Toy Department at Bocock Stroud Company where he could also purchase all the classical and jazz artists that he loved at a discount.
  • Lifetime full-time job was with Western Electric of Winston-Salem for 37 years.
  • This account of this Christian man will always be remembered by his family and friends. As he would say, "Let the Good Times Roll."
  • He is survived by his wife; three offspring; his daughters-in-law; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

There will be no public viewing.
