  Mrs. Georgia Elizabeth Mickle Smith 

Mrs. Georgia Elizabeth Mickle Smith, a recent resident of New Haven, CT and Oak Bluffs, MA, the beloved wife of the late Warren Julian Smith, Sr., passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven, CT. Born in Winston-Salem, June 17, 1926, she was the daughter of George Wright and Lillian Bynum Mickle.

Upon graduation, Mrs. Smith worked in the Chemistry lab at Salem College and was hired as Rev. David Hedgley’s first secretary at First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Smith joined Wachovia Bank and Trust in 1958 and by 1975 she became the first African American female named branch manager at North Office on Patterson Avenue. She graduated from the American Institute of Banking and later became Assistant Vice President and the manager of the Northeast Branch before her retirement in 1999. The building has since been renamed the Black-Phillips-Smith Government Office Building. Prior to her affiliation with Wachovia Bank and Trust, Mrs. Smith worked at the North Carolina Mutual Insurance Company.

She was also a longtime member of Hanes Memorial CME Church and a lifelong devotee to her ancestral church, First Baptist Church. She had been elected as a delegate to several District Conferences, Annual Conferences, General Conferences, and Women’s Missionary Quadrennials Assemblies. Mrs. Smith attended Convocations, lay retreats, missionary institutes and leadership trainings. She served on the Finance Committee of the Women’s Missionary Council, Life Membership and also as Treasurer. Mrs. Smith was appointed to serve the 7th Episcopal District as reporter and Master Card sales representative. She was the Annual Conference Treasurer from 1985 – 1993 and later served on the Finance Committee and Literature and Publication Committee. She was also appointed Editor of the District HiLites.

In addition, Georgia Mickle Smith was a local Past Missionary President and organized the Phyllis Bedford Department at Hanes and has been the Women’s Day Speaker. She was the Chairperson on the 1989 Coming-In-Celebration of our Church. She was the District President for the Stewardesses and was featured in the Stewardess Manual by Elder Will Chambers. . She was a local Past President of the Stewardess Board, a Past President of the Pastor’s Aide Society at Hanes, a former Sunday school teacher and pianist. In addition, she was a member and Past President of the Hanes Creative Club, a Past President of the Hanes Memorial CME Chancel Choir and a charter member of the Shanta-Malia Chorale Ensemble.

She was a member of several organizations including: Gamma Phi Delta (Alpha Upsilon Chapter), National Women Achievement, Inc (Kernersville Chapter), National Association of Bank-Women, Inc., Carver Senior Citizen Club, and the Jack & Jill of America (Associates)

Georgia Elizabeth Mickle Smith was an excellent wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, family, church matriarch and friend and will be missed beyond expression.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George Wright and Lillian Bynum Mickle; a daughter, Cassandra Elizabeth Smith Rush; and a brother, James G. Mickle.

She is survived by two children, son, Warren Julian Smith, Jr. (Anita) of Louisville, KY and daughter, Georgia “Mycki” Mickle Smith-Jennings (Tim) of New Haven, CT.
She is survived by eight grandchildren, Wendy Jeanne Ingram (Marvin), Clarksville, MD, Warren Julian Smith, III (Pam), West Chester, OH, Georgia “Gygi” deLondon Jennings, New Haven, CT, William Jonathan Smith, Baltimore, MD, James (Jay) Bristol Rush, III, Lexington, MA, Andrew Julian Smith (Rachel), Grand Blanc, MI, Warren Alexander Rush, New Haven, CT, and Rashaun Darrin Smith, Boston, MA; nine siblings, Dennis L. Mickle, Sr. (Pearl), Indianapolis, IN, Roscoe W. Mickle, Sr. (Dorothy), Cincinnati, OH, Annie M. McRae (James), Winston-Salem, NC, Lillian M. Stephens (Clarence), Gonzalez, LA, Lillie M. Julian Mickle, Winston-Salem, NC, John B. Mickle (Joan), Durham, NC, George T. Mickle, Windsor, CA, Andrea M. Bush, Winston-Salem, NC, and David A. Mickle, Jacksonville, FL; a sister-in-law, Annie Mickle;14 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins (Price and Jackson families) and friends.

Funeral services will be held at Noon Saturday, September 9, 2006 at Hanes Memorial CME Church with the Reverend Rayfield Medcalf officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Family visitation will be held from 5 pm until 7 pm Friday, September 8, 2006 at the funeral home.
