Mrs. Mattie Slaughter Clarke 

Mrs. Mattie Slaughter Clarke, of 3751 Spaulding Drive, Winston-Salem, NC, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 23, 2006 at Forsyth Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family. Mattie was born on July 5, 1934 in Nashville, Tennessee.
She attended Nashville public schools and graduated cum laude from Tennessee State University in 1955 with a B.S. degree in Mathematics. Mattie taught math in the Nashville public schools for several years and in 1958 married Thomas L. Clarke. In 1963, they made their permanent home in Winston-Salem, NC. She was an active member of First Baptist Church and numerous civic and charitable organizations. Mattie was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and friend. She made a difference in the lives of all who knew her.
Mattie was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Beatrice Slaughter, and a brother who died in infancy.
She leaves to cherish her memory a loving husband, Dr. Thomas L Clarke; her children, Benita, Beverly (Bernard), and Thomas Jr.; her granddaughter, Veronique; and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at Noon Friday, June 30, 2006 at First Baptist Church, 700 Highland Avenue, with the Reverend Glenn Pettiford officiating. The family visitation will be held from 11:00 am until Noon. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
