Carter, 60, of 1330
Ashley Crossing, Winston-Salem, affectionately known to family
and friends as "Smitty," passed away unexpectedly on Monday,
March 20, 2006, at his residence. He was born on March 8,
1946, in Winston-Salem, the son of Smith Clay Stokes and
Lenoir Juanita Carter. He attended the Winston-Salem/Forsyth
County schools and was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds
Tobacco Co., having worked at Whitaker Park and Tobaccoville.
He was a member of Carver Road Christian Church, where he was
a Sunday school teacher and Bible study teacher. He was a
veteran of the U.S. Navy. He is survived by his wife,
Gertrude Jackson Carter; six children, Michael, Kim, Kenneth,
Smith Jr., Steven (Bonita) and Matthew Carter; his mother,
Lenoir Carter; 15 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; 11
sisters, Millicent Carter, Joan Carter, Jasmine (Alonzo) Reid,
Jacqueline Carter, Carlene Carter, Pamela Carter, Willette
Carter, Lenoir Carter, Shelia (Terrance) Langford, Pamela
(William) Taylor and Debbie Stokes; aunts Mary Lee Carter and
Linda Ann Anderson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other
relatives and friends.
Memorial
services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 23, at
Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian
Church, with Bishop Sheldon McCarter officiating. The family visitation
will be from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Thursday, March 23, at the
church. |
