Mr.
Vardell Solomon, 70, of
3060 Apollo Drive
, died
Friday, November 11, 2005
after an extended illness. He was born on
April 16, 1935
to Oliver and Lucile Solomon who preceded him in death. “King
Solomon,” as he was affectionately known to his friends, was a
talented musician and was known for sponsoring the 4th of
July Jam Sessions that featured musicians from in and around the area.
He is also known for performing his rendition of Louis Armstrong's
song “What A Wonderful World.”
He was a 1953 graduate of
Atkins
High School
and was employed as a surveyor with Virgil Joyce Mapping Company from
1953-1968. He moved to
Los Angeles
,
California
in 1968 and retired from the Los Angeles Transportation System in
1990.
A son Howard Dwain Solomon, two
brothers, John Henry Solomon and William Edward Solomon, a sister,
Helen Solomon Redd and a special niece, Frankie Smith Williams, preceded
him in death.
Mr. Solomon is survived by a
very devoted significant other, Maxine Greer; two sons, Vardell Erwin
Solomon (
Doris
) of
Reidsville
,
NC
and Derrick Thompson of
Atlanta
,
Ga.
; three daughters, Sandra Oglesby and Janice Solomon, both of
Salisbury, NC and Gina Solomon of Winston-Salem, NC; ten
grandchildren, two of whom resided with him, Irie and Miles; two
great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Solomon of Newark, NJ and
Danny Solomon of Winston-Salem, NC; five sisters, Mary Roberts of
Newark, NJ, Deloris Moseley of Washington, DC, Dr. Marie Williamson
(Curtis) of Greensboro, NC, Louella Nelson (William) of Fort
Washington, Md.; and Cleopatra Solomon of Winston-Salem, NC and a
brother-in-law, George Redd, Winston-Salem, NC. Vardell will also be
missed by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held at
1 p.m.
Wednesday, November 16, 2005
at the Russell funeral Home Chapel with Bishop John Huntley of Alpha
and Omega Church, officiating. Interment will follow in
Evergreen
Cemetery
. The family will receive friends from
12:30 p.m.
until
1 p.m.
Wednesday at the funeral home.
Vardell's friends will remember
his musical talents and creative genius. His family will remember
his superb handiwork and home beautification projects that reflect the
essence of his-theme-song “What A Wonderful World.”
