Mary Wilma Horton Sharpe

Our loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt made that final journey and she now rests in peace with her Heavenly Father.
Mrs. Mary Wilma Horton Sharpe, affectionately known to her family members as “Mae” and formally of 226 West 25th Street, Winston-Salem, passed away Saturday, October 22, 2005. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Helen Jones and Veola Williams; her brothers, Otis Horton, Curtis Jackson, James Horton and George Horton.
Mrs. Sharpe was born on August 10, 1921 to the late George and Minnie Horton. She was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem. Her education was nurtured by the public schools of the city, graduating from Atkins High School in 1938. She continued her education at Winston-Salem Teachers College (Winston-Salem State University), where she received a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education. She taught school in the cities of Burlington, NC and Dunn, NC in her early years. She later became a well known educator in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System. Some of her former supervisors’ remarks were “Mary, you could teach a rock to read.” Mrs. Sharpe retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System in 1990.
She was a member of Pleasant Union Primitive Baptist Church for over 50 years where she sometimes served as church pianist and director of many Christmas and Easter pageants. She was a mentor to many children throughout the city of Winston-Salem. She served as treasurer of Atkins High School “Classes of the Thirties” and was a member of the “TFU Pinochle Club.” She was a volunteer reading teacher at “QEI” (Quality Education Institute) until her illness.
She leaves to cherish her memory; a husband of 60 years, Hobert J. Sharpe, Jr., of the home; a daughter, Brenda Sharpe Adams of Winston-Salem, NC; three sons, Hobert (Elga) Sharpe, III, of Woodland Hills, Ca., Darrell (Marlene) Sharpe of Bushkill, Pa. and Vernon (Tami) Sharpe of New York, NY; eight grandchildren, Tonya Dunovant, Robert Adams, III, Jules Sharpe, Darren Griffin, Darrell Sharpe, Jr., Terence Sharpe, Hope Smalls and Faith Smalls; five great-grandchildren Breanna, Jayla, Michael, Shantel and Brandon; three nieces, Andrea Williams Scott (also raised as a daughter), Dolores Horton Phillips and Bonita Horton; five nephews, Bobbie Jones, James Ray Horton, Clifton Horton, Napoleon Horton and Peter Horton; a host of great-nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and many, many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 26 at Pleasant Union Primitive Baptist Church with the Reverend Reginald Lampkins, officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Family visitation will be held from l p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. The remains will lie in state at the church from Noon until 2 p.m.
