Mrs.  Miriam V. Patterson Littlejohn

"One of the deep secrets of life is that all that is really worth the doing is what we do for others."
Mrs. Miriam V. Patterson Littlejohn of 1241 E. 23rd St. passed away on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005, after a period of illness. God, in his wise providence and his loving mercy, called her home at 9:31 a.m. Our beloved aunt, sister, cousin and friend, better known to her family as "Bo-Peep" and "Mim-Mim," was born the sixth of 10 children to Marshall Sr. and Thelma F. Ellis Patterson. She was united in marriage to Luther C. Littlejohn in 1970 and preceded in death by him in 1999. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Queen Elizabeth P. Harper and Margretta P. Peeples; and six brothers, Lester Patterson, Charles A. Patterson, W. Edward Patterson, Jason F. Patterson, Marshall Patterson Jr. and Leon F. Patterson. She is survived by one sister, Fay P. Eldridge (Lindsay), of Detroit. She had several nieces: Patricia Patterson of Charlotte; Miriam Elaine Thompson, Yvonne P. King and Avis C. Patterson, all of Winston-Salem; Patricia Smith, Alice Faye Bennett, Linda Edmonson, Jennifer Conley, Venetta Conley and Audrey Eldridge, all of Detroit; Terry Ann Phillips of New York City; and Vera Person of Dillon, S.C. She is survived by four nephews: James Lindsay Eldridge Jr. of Chicago; Marshall (Brenda) Patterson III, Charles E. Patterson and Eddie Leon Simmons, all of Winston-Salem. She also is survived by 23 great nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives. She was educated in the public schools of Winston-Salem and graduated from Atkins High School in 1948 and Forsyth Tech Institute Nursing Class in 1950. She was the room inspector at the Hotel Robert E. Lee for 17 years, where was the first black person to have that job. She retired from the Wake Forest University Bowman Gray Medical School as technician in Pediatric and Hematology/Oncology after 25 years of service, then she did substitute work with the Forsyth County School System. At an early age, she joined Springfield Baptist Church, and later joined the Hanes Memorial C.M.E. Church, where she served faithfully on the Chancel Choir, Mass Choir and Women's Choir, the Missionary and Stewardess boards, the Creative Club and was in charge of the Hostess Committee. She was a member of Meridian Chapter No. 308 Order of Eastern Stars; and Golden Circle Assembly No. 64 and the Secret Pals Club. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Hanes Memorial C.M.E. Church. Burial will be at Piedmont Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 this evening, Dec. 5, at Hanes Memorial C.M.E. Church.
