Freddie Edmond Burks

Mr. Freddie Edmond Burks of Winston-Salem, NC, Sunrise May 19, 1943 and Sunset Thursday, November 3, 2005. He was born to the Reverend Osborne Silas Burks, Sr. and Mrs. Clara Ella Smith Burks in Port Gibson, MS on May 19, 1943. Freddie was the youngest son of six children. He departed this life at the early age of 62.
He was reared in a loving Christian home where he attended the Claiborne County public schools and graduated from Alcorn State University. In 1966 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology.
In 1967, Freddie moved to San Francisco, CA to start his career as an Adult Probation Officer. His career led him to San Mateo County where he worked for 30 years before retiring in 1998. After retiring from San Mateo County, Freddie relocated to Winston-Salem, NC where he worked part-time for the Forsyth County ABC Board.
His parents and one brother, Allen Earl Burks, Sr., preceded him in death.
He was loved by everyone he met. Throughout his life Freddie enjoyed life to the fullest. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and golfer. He also boasted of making the best barbeque this side of the Mississippi!
Freddie is survived by his loving wife of eighteen years, Lois Virginia McRae Burks; five children; Amber (Adam) Mansir of Sausalito, CA, Tyneta (Jerome) Heath of Burlington, NJ, Keith (Cathy) Burks of Antioch, CA, Erin (Michael) Wheeler of Fremont, CA, and Kyle (Jennifer) Burks of Ventura, CA; six grandchildren, Tesia and Maia of Burlington, NJ, Ian, Christopher and Miles of Antioch, CA, and Hayley of Sausalito, CA; three sisters; Irma (Lucious) Daily of West Point, MS, Jessie (Melvin) Arnold of Lorman, MS, and Ruth Juanita (Bruce) Stewart of Troy, MI; one brother; Osborne (Helen) Burks, Jr. Augusta, GA; mother-in-law; Mae Frances McRae; father-in-law; James (Annie) McRae; sisters-in-law, Deloris Burks of Lorman, MS, Dorothy (Richard) Pettus, Cheryl McRae, Valeria McRae, Lynnetta McRae, and Phyllis McRae; brothers-in-law; Vincent (Gencie) McRae, Sr., Gregory McRae, and Wylie McRae all of Winston-Salem; as well as a host of nieces and nephews; special friends from “the lot,” Richard Bell, Alphonso Amey, Joe Fleming, Henry and Sam Spinks, and Tom Hornsby all of California, Edgar May, Jr. of Chicago, IL, Sam, Bennie, June and Mike Conrad, Ken Miller, Derek Williams, Mike Brady, and Henry Hardin of Winston-Salem, and a host of others.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 9, 2005 at Zion Memorial Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Joseph Jones, officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Family visitation will be held from Noon until 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
